When someone has a serious alcohol use disorder, they can receive help in an addiction treatment center. Alcohol rehab centers provide the structure and support that people need to overcome their alcoholism and reclaim their lives. Alcohol rehab programs typically offer detoxification, individual and group therapy, behavioral modification, education about alcoholism and recovery, family counseling, and more. Alcoholism can lead to problems in personal relationships, work, and school. It also leads to health concerns, including heart disease and liver damage.
Most rehab programs start with a meeting between the person and an admissions staff member. The goal of this meeting is to get a better understanding of the person’s situation and to create a customized plan for their time in rehab. They may be asked to sign paperwork and verify their insurance benefits during this time as well.

Once a person begins their treatment program, they can expect to wake up early for a day that might include group therapy sessions, individual therapy sessions, education about their addiction, activities like art projects or fitness classes, meals, and time for sleep and personal care. Most rehabs also have a set time for “lights out,” when free time is over and people are encouraged to go to bed.
After a person finishes their rehab program, they can expect to continue with a regular psychiatric visit and/or a therapy appointment with a mental health professional to address any underlying issues that could be contributing to their alcoholism. They will be taught coping skills that they can use when confronted with difficult situations in their daily lives. They will also learn how to handle triggers, such as stress or conflict with others, without turning to alcohol.
